Just as it is important to choose a material that suits your project, it is equally important to select the appropriate finish for that material. When it comes to natural stone, the surface finish helps dictate the functional characteristics of the material. An antiqued surface will provide slip-resistance, while a polished surface will be highly reflective. Finishes can also affect the color of the stone. Some finishes will enhance the color while others will soften it.
At Durango Stone, we own the quarries and the factories. We can apply any standard finish (Honed, Polished, Brushed, Antiqued, Tumbled, Bushhammered) or any custom finish to achieve your unique look. We have total control of the finest quality natural stone in the industry. There are no limitations to your natural stone needs. Let’s take a look at some of our popular finishes.
This proprietary finish actually applies 200 years of wear to our stones to give the authentic look of antiquity. All soft stone is removed during this process to complete the old-world look.
Polishing a natural stone finish involves grinding, sanding and buffing the stone to a high-gloss, mirror-like surface. A polished finish is very smooth and reflective. Popularly used for interior cladding, countertops and fireplace surrounds.
HONED & FILLED
A honed finish still involves grinding and sanding, but not to the level of a polished finish. Honed finishes are a satin smooth surface that reflects very little light. Honed surfaces are best for high-traffic areas like flooring or countertops and are typically a bit easier to maintain.
A highly textured surface best used for external applications such as paving, walkways and cladding. A mechanical hammer hits the stone leaving small indentations on the surface. The result is an evenly textured surface that’s ideal for non-slip, high traffic applications.
A brushed finish is obtained by brushing the stones surface with a coarse rotary wire wheel or brush until the desired texture is achieved. After this treatment, the colors of the stone become more vivid and provides a slightly leather feel.
Durango Stone provides a unique process for the Antiqued Finish. As opposed to industry standard of blasting the surface of the stone with sand granules, we use copper slags with an intense pressure that actually distresses the surface of the stone and is cleanable. This unique process provides a slip-resistance mainly used for exterior applications but is widely used in interior applications as well. Durango Stone also recommends this finish to stone that exceed the tumbling finish parameters. The Antique finish can be applied to all custom and standard dimensions.
